A ‘highlight’ of the year: Wendell Old Home Day returns Sept. 21

WENDELL — Donna Horn had hoped to donate to the Town Offices the head of the paper mache dragon she rode as part of the Misfit Prom in June. Though a lack of a fire-retardant coating made this impossible, you still have a chance to see the 4-foot-tall piece of art at Wendell’s Old Home Day on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The head, consisting primarily of tomato cages and newspapers, will be reattached to the dragon’s body and make an appearance on one of the parade floats, as long as it is not raining. Horn said she expects the dragon to sit on a flatbed that is being made into a hayride for kids.
“I’m excited about it,” Horn said. “Everybody loves the dragon.”
Alistair MacMartin, one of five members of the Old Home Day Organizing Group, said Wendell town crier Kathy-Ann Becker will lead the 11 a.m. parade that helps kick off the annual event held on the Town Common.
“The Misfit Prom and the Home Old Day [are] kind of highlights of the year,” MacMartin said. “And everybody loves a parade.”
Sally Stuffin is orchestrating the maiden voyage of Wendell Blast, a homegrown multigenerational funkyphonic band consisting of trombones, flutes, drums and other instruments. She said anyone is welcome to bring an instrument and join the band, which will perform “When the Saints Go Marching In” in B-flat and “I’ll Fly Away” in E-flat for the parade. Players will convene at the town’s north common at 10:45 a.m.
“We are not fussy about quality,” Stuffin said. “Everybody is welcome to join in.”
Christine Texiera said there at least 40 vendors slated to be at the event — about the same as last year — and there is room for more. The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone who is interested in becoming a vendor can send an email to ctexiera@gmail.com.

MacMartin said there will be a children’s tent with youth activities and an antique stove display as well as a couple of food trucks across the street at the Wendell Meetinghouse. He also said the band Carol Devine & The Mighty Fine and a group of Morris dancers are expected to perform on the Town Common.
Wendell Old Home Day is usually held in August, but the organizing group decided to hold it in September this year because the weather would be a little cooler and fewer people would be out of town on vacation. The event was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
