And Then What Happened?: Stage is set for a timeless groove

A Nan walks into a party in Newport, Rhode Island, where a band is setting up to play.
They’re young, in their early 20s, and she pays them no real mind, not thinking that the years dividing all their musical tastes might ever intersect. But then they start playing, and suddenly it’s 1977 and I’m dancin’ in the moonlight, free as a bird, and I think, “How in the world do those kids know that song?” — or, it turns out, all those songs?
Because the kids over there on the stage looked like any young’uns you might see walking down the street in 2024, but what was coming out of their mouths, their guitars, their bass, drums and saxophone sounded exactly like what I grew up listening to and loving all those years ago, when I was their age.
The band was called Timeless, and indeed they were; Timeless and so talented that when a group suddenly had to drop out of the Newport Jazz Festival a few days later, I was able to convince the stage’s producer to hire them as the replacement performers.
As they set up at the festival, Timeless’ timely youth and their modern-day appearance caused those older festival-goers to once again walk on by, but for their opening song, they struck up the first lines of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” so superbly that people thought it was Stevie himself and came running over to see exactly who and what was goin’ on.
And then they stayed, groovin’ on a Sunday afternoon, all the way through, until the show was done, applauding and cheering at the end.
Now, I dig rock ’n’ roll music, and enjoyed those young men and their show so much that I thought I’d bring the groovy situation to western Massachusetts and take all of y’all on a magic carpet ride back to the good old days of our youth. We could use some good vibes and happy gatherings these days, and so, on Nov. 15 I’m going to turn back time with Timeless themselves in a live concert with a dance party at Ashfield’s Town Hall. I’ll line the walls with chairs and leave the center floor open so that people can dance the night away to the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Jim Croce, the Eagles, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and all the rest of those bands whose shows you still miss to this day.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. with the concert starting at 7:30.

This show isn’t just for grown-ups, though. A friend of mine who licenses music for films, television, commercials and the like told me recently that young’uns love the old stuff, too. Boys and girls just want to have fun and this is the music that they want to have fun to, which makes perfect sense to me. Those were the days, and the music was good!
Tickets will be on sale before the show for $20 on Eventbrite, as well as at Ashfield Hardware. On-site tickets will be $25, available at the door on the night of the party. We’ll serve fresh-baked goods and drinks downstairs and good times upstairs.
There’s no time like the present to recognize that all you need is love, and as we age, it’s now or never. We’re entering our golden years, though truly, the real gold was back then. Throw on your blue suede shoes, your mini skirts, bell-bottoms and headbands and come celebrate good times. Twist and shout, shake your booty and dance to the music. Or, just take it easy, sit down and listen to the music. The boys are back in town, and we are gonna spend a groovin’ evening so happy together.
As Pete Townsend once said, “Rock ’n’ roll might not solve your problems, but it does let you dance all over them.”
And that’s just what we need to come together, right now.
