GREENFIELD — Witches and wizards, angels and demons, superheroes and cartoon characters filled the downtown area on Tuesday evening for the city’s annual Halloween festivities.

“It’s always so uplifting to see the streets filled with families and friends from around Franklin County,” said Recreation Director Christy Moore. “There’s even people here from the hilltowns.”

While it was a slower start than in past years, she said, Main Street soon filled with trick-or-treaters, making their way from business to business. Twenty storefronts participated in the event.

“The [Greenfield Business Association] did a great job reaching out to try to get more involvement,” Moore said.

For 9-year-old Emma Fitzpatrick, who dressed up as the cartoon character Scooby-Doo, the best part of the night was “seeing all the costumes.” The Halloween party at school earlier in the day was fun, too. Emma was accompanied by her parents Mark Fitzpatrick, dressed as Shaggy, and Heather Greene, dressed as Daphne. Together, they walked in the rag shag parade, which made its way from Mohawk Mall to Energy Park for the costume contest.

Dawning the outfit of Hermione Granger, the fictional witch in the “Harry Potter” series, Sequoia Richard, 10, said the best part of the night was the opportunity to dress up. The candy, of course, was also a highlight.

“The creativity is very exciting,” Moore said of the costumes seen downtown. “There’s rarely duplicates.”

In addition to trick-or-treating, the rag shag parade and a costume contest, the Garden Cinemas hosted a free showing of the 1966 film “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” Franklin County’s YMCA hosted a “spooktacular” family fun night.
