Detainee dies after ‘medical event’ at Shelburne Falls State Police barracks

SHELBURNE FALLS — A Greenfield man who had been arrested on cocaine possession charges died Wednesday morning after suffering a “significant medical event” while in custody at the Shelburne Falls State Police barracks, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
The 28-year-old was arrested on Monday evening along Route 2A in Greenfield following a traffic stop, during which State Police discovered suspected cocaine, according to the DA’s office.
The man was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield after suffering the medical event shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was subsequently transferred to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he died Wednesday morning.
Although there are no signs of foul play, according to the DA’s office, the matter is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s office. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
