GCET maps out plans to expand internet service in Greenfield with $1.2M in grants

GREENFIELD — GCET General Manager John Lunt mapped out plans for two separate projects this week after the internet service provider received more than $1.2 million in federal grant funding administered through the Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI) to expand its services to “underserved” parts of the city, as well as The Weldon apartments.
In September, GCET, which stands for Greenfield Community Energy and Technology, announced that it was awarded more than $750,000 in Gap Networks Grant funds to build out broadband internet in regions of the city that lack the service requirements necessary for high-speed internet over the course of about two years.
“We are getting to some very remote areas, but [the Gap Networks Grant] allows us to go all the way down Plain Road East, all the way down Lover’s Lane and get into the park,” Lunt said during a meeting Wednesday night. “These are areas that are particularly hard to get to.”
Displaying a map of Greenfield, Lunt made note of highlighted areas near South Shelburne Road, the northern portion of Leyden Road and a long stretch of land running north from Adams Road onto Lampblack Road near the Griswold Conservation Area.
Regions highlighted on the map, Lunt said, are historically underserved areas where GCET plans to expand service under the Gap Networks Grant. He said the area of southern Greenfield near the Transfer Station has had “pretty terrible” internet and will also be connected to GCET service under the grant.
Alongside the $750,000 Gap Networks Grant, the internet service provider also received approximately $500,000 in Residential Retrofit grant funds, administered through MBI, to help equip the High Street apartment building, The Weldon, with the infrastructure necessary for high-speed internet.
Lunt noted that the grant projects will coincide with the provider’s work on its North Build — the installation of service to an estimated 1,100 households in the areas of Bernardston Road, Colrain Road, Meadow Lane and Green River Road as well as the area of Leyden and Country Club roads.
The Weldon project, Lunt said previously, is expected to bring service to an additional 105 apartments. He added that GCET was one of only four internet providers in the state, alongside Verizon, Comcast and Charter, to be awarded a comparable grant through MBI.

“This is a grant that ends at the end of calendar year 2026, but we think that [The Weldon retrofit] should go along a little faster, mostly because make-ready is not going to be as long as it will be for the poles that we have to do for the Gap grant,” Lunt said. “At The Weldon, we think that we will do quite well.”
