Two athletic fields at Greenfield High School will have new names beginning this fall.

The Greenfield City Council voted Wednesday to name the athletic fields behind Greenfield High School “Donna Woodcock Field,” and the baseball diamond at Veterans Field “Suchanek Diamond,” with both measures passing unanimously.

Woodcock coached the Greenfield High School field hockey program from 1982-2005 and the softball team from 1989-2004. She later spent time as the Green Wave athletic director and was also the school’s principal.

Woodcock had her most success coaching the Greenfield field hockey team, where she compiled a 265-83-53 record, won five western Massachusetts titles and made it to four state championship games. Woodcock won two state titles, the first coming in 1989, the second in 1999.

On the softball diamond, Woodcock went 218-98 over 16 years coaching the Greenfield varsity squad. She won five league championships and brought the Green Wave to four Western Mass. title games. Between the two sports she has a record of 483-181-53, giving her a winning percentage of .711.

Woodcock died in a car crash in 2023 at the age of 65.

“This one did not go to committee,” City Council President John Bottomley said. "It's been through a very long, convoluted process of which it's had unanimous positives from every board.”

Suchanek has been a staple in Greenfield athletics for over 50 years.

The veteran coach just completed his 51st season leading the Green Wave baseball team, where he’s compiled an impressive record of 692-375-1 and has won five Western Mass titles. Just this past year, Suchanek led Greenfield to an MIAA Div. 5 state semifinal appearance.

He served as a physical education teacher in Greenfield and was also an athletic director for the Wave.

“Tom Suchanek has been the staple here in Greenfield for, ever,” At-Large Councilor Michael Terounzo — who played for Suchanek while at Greenfield — said. “I saw him at the high school not long ago. He's a great guy. We didn't always see eye-to-eye but man, that guy took care of that field. It has been Suchanek Field for the last 40 years since they revamped it. We can officially say that now.”

Official dedications for the fields are expected during the coming school year.
