GREENFIELD — The city’s Police Department has released camera footage from the parked cruiser that was struck Wednesday evening by a Toyota Corolla driven by a 77-year-old Greenfield man, who was issued a citation for failure to stay within marked lanes.

A YouTube linked shared to the Greenfield Police Department’s Facebook page early Thursday afternoon shows the Toyota traveling west on Pleasant Street and gradually veering left until it slams into the front of a cruiser occupied by Officer Nicholas Limoges at 6:55 p.m. The Toyota narrowly missed a vehicle parked in front of the cruiser that had been stopped by Limoges for a traffic violation.

Much of the audio has been redacted but Limoges can be heard apparently moaning in pain and communicating to dispatchers that he needed assistance. At the end of the 57-second video, Limoges can be seen holding a flashlight in his left hand and walking around the rear of the Toyota before opening the driver’s door and leaning in to check on the operator. The video can be viewed at bit.ly/3m8Cm8b.

Limoges was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center as a precaution. On Thursday, Deputy Police Chief William Gordon said the Limoges had suffered “a slight hand injury” and needed to have a follow-up appointment with a doctor before returning to work.

The driver of the vehicle Limoges had stopped was allowed to leave the scene without a citation but was identified as a witness to the crash.

Both vehicles involved in the crash sustained considerable damage and were towed. No airbags deployed. At the scene, Lt. Todd Dodge told the Greenfield Recorder his department planned to bring the cruiser to an auto body repair shop.

“That car’s out of commission for a bit,” he said.

Limoges was an officer in Deerfield in August 2019 when he and a colleague conducting a traffic stop were struck by a driver believed to be under the influence of drugs.
