GREENFIELD — The city will hold the first of several Automated Recycling Outreach Transition meetings on Tuesday, June 25, at 6 p.m.

The meeting will take place at the John Zon Community Center and remotely on Zoom. It will also be recorded and posted on Greenfield Community Television (GCTV) for viewing at a later date.

Automated Recycling Outreach Transition meetings will also take place on Monday, Sept. 9, Tuesday, Oct. 8, and Tuesday, Dec. 10. Each will take place at the John Zon Community Center and will begin at 6 p.m.

The city’s transition from a manual, dual-stream recycling method to an automated, single-stream method comes through a $2.05 million grant awarded last September by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The grant is part of the EPA’s Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling grant program, known as SWIFR. A formal City Council vote to accept the grant came in February, allowing the city to move forward on the multi-year project, which will also involve purchasing new trucks and developing ordinances in regards to automated collection.

“We are thrilled to begin the public outreach process on our transition to automated recycling,” Department of Public Works Director Marlo Warner II said in a statement. “I am grateful to all of the talented individuals on our SWIFR team who have and continue to assist with this project.”

In conjunction with the first outreach meeting, the city published an automated recycling transition page at tinyurl.com/2926txzz. The page was designed to be a comprehensive resource on the recycling transition, and features a question-and-answer session, supporting documentation and a meeting archive.

The city’s transition to automated recycling will entail:

■New DPW recycling collection vehicles that will replace the department’s aging fleet.

■A reduction in carbon emissions and idling, as the new vehicles’ larger size will double current fleet efficiency.

■Processing upgrades at the Transfer Station.

■Improved safety for DPW staff, who won’t be exposed to hazardous conditions during collections because they will collect the recycling inside their vehicles via an automated control system.

■New, city-issued recycling bins for residents and community stakeholders. The carts can hold up to five times more recyclable materials.
