GREENFIELD — With close to 30 health and safety violations documented by inspectors on Tuesday evening, the Hangar Pub & Grill became the latest in a string of three city restaurants to be closed by public health officials in the past week.
Health Inspector Nicole Ducharme documented 28 violations, about half of which were described as “critical” or “red” items. Some of those included not wearing gloves while cutting lemons at the bar, expired and rotting lettuce in the refrigerator, outdated meat and raw chicken without labels, and food items being cooled or handled at improper temperatures.
Other items listed included an unsealed freezer, a dirty breading bin and no paper towels at the employee hand-washing station.
General manager Alyssa Raples declined to comment when reached by phone on Tuesday evening.
Ducharme, who noted she’s closed the Federal Street restaurant in the past for health code violations, said her visit this week was part of an annual inspection. A re-inspection date was yet to be determined.
“They have quite a bit to do this late in the day,” she said at around 4:30 p.m.
The restaurant is typically open from 4 to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursdays, 11:30 to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
Ducharme said while it was relatively out of the ordinary for three restaurants to be closed in a period of a week, she isn’t sure what to attribute it to. She added that the Health Department inspected Wendy’s and Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar prior to arriving at the Hangar for its 4 p.m. opening, and both of those restaurants were “absolutely spotless.”
