In recent years, independent pharmacies in Massachusetts and around the country have closed up shop at alarming rates, leading to pharmacy deserts in too many areas around our state. As the health care system becomes increasingly consolidated, it’s often too challenging for these small business owners to make ends meet.

Perhaps most importantly, as these pharmacies close up shop, there is no one left to serve the health needs of their communities. Patients in our state must travel long distances just to receive the care they need, and as we enter flu season, this problem will only get worse before it gets better.

Hundreds of independent pharmacies in Massachusetts have chosen to partner with Pharmacy Services Administrative Organizations (PSAOs). PSAOs provide crucial administrative support to independent pharmacies, helping them navigate the health care marketplace and ensuring that all of their business needs are met. Even though PSAOs don’t dictate the prices patients pay or how much pharmacists receive in reimbursements, their expertise in the industry allows them to advocate for the interests of independent pharmacies.

I know first-hand how difficult it can be for pharmacists to manage the business side of their company while also providing their patients with the best care possible. However, through these partnerships, I have full faith that our state’s independent pharmacies will be prepared to take on these challenges and ensure their businesses and the communities they serve continue to thrive.
