In these very uncertain times, full of conflict and violence but also resolution and hope, Mount Toby Monthly Meeting of Friends strongly endorses a set of policy solutions regarding nuclear disarmament that have been proposed by the grassroots coalition Back from the Brink (preventnuclearwar.org/take-action/).
We urge community organizations and our elected officials to join us in supporting these policy solutions. They are as follows. We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:
■Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
■Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first
■Ending the sole, unchecked authority of any president to launch a nuclear attack
■Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert; and
■Canceling the plan to replace its entire arsenal with enhanced weapons.
