Remembering Tom Harty

Interesting reading about Tom Harty’s boots [“He’s still hiking with me,” Recorder, July 15]. When I was leading a hike for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Tom and Barbara were with us. Tom said if we are too slow, don’t wait for us. We never had to.
I was talking with Tom shortly before he was killed. He had just climbed Mount Greylock on a time trial. He said he was beat when he reached the top. He said that he hoped to do better next year. Tom was always my role model.
