Thomas Newton: Leave the Green River dam

The historic dam controversy is back in the news again. Some are destined to rid the beautiful Green River of its very unique dam. The thought of the Green River having improved habitat and better connectivity is bunk. Having better public accessibility can be pursued currently if someone is willing to do it. The backwaters of this dam provide more habitat for all kinds of species both floral, mammals and aquatic life. The dam is a testament to our forefathers ingenuity to build such a masterpiece. Leave the dam be and enjoy and improve its surroundings.
Greenfield has an opportunity to utilize the banks of the river to create a “river walk” or perhaps a designated park or to develop the surroundings for folks to picnic on its shores. Once the beautiful dam is gone the river’s edge will be just another river’s edge. A site plaque of the previous cutlery factory cannot replace this wonderful historic spot. I would urge the town to rethink the possibilities of this historic area.
