South Deerfield man airlifted for treatment after New Salem crash

NEW SALEM — A man was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree near 175 Neilson Road at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
Firefighters and state troopers found the driver, a 36-year-old South Deerfield man, conscious and alert, according to State Police spokesperson David Procopio. The man was reportedly airlifted to Worcester for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
According to Orange Fire Chief James Young, an Orange EMS ambulance transported the man to a medical helicopter that was waiting at the Orange Municipal Airport.
The scene was cleared at 9:20 p.m., according to Procopio. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by troopers with the State Police barracks in Athol.
