MILLERS FALLS — The Millers Falls branch of the Montague Public Libraries will close temporarily beginning Thursday, Sept. 26, for interior renovations.
According to the Montague Public Libraries’ website, renovations at the Millers Falls Library include painting, floor replacement and layout changes to make the space open to public programming. The goal is to reopen the week of Oct. 21 or Oct. 28.
Montague Public Libraries Director Caitlin Kelley said that while these interior changes are underway, the Millers Falls Library and its services will be unavailable.
“We’re hoping to only be closed for three weeks, so unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to provide any services during those times,” she said.
Kelley explained the books will be stored away during the renovations, but patrons are welcome to reroute their book holds to the Montague Center Library or the Carnegie Public Library in Turners Falls.
As for the food pantry, this service will be unavailable until the Millers Falls Library reopens. Kelley said an alternative is the Franklin Area Survival Center at 96 Fourth St. in Turners Falls.
The renovations are funded using donations and yearly state aid allotted to the Montague Public Libraries by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Kelley explained. The work is estimated to cost roughly $20,000.
When the library reopens, the public can expect it to have more open space for community programs. There will also be mobile book shelves, allowing them to be moved out of the way to make more space.

Additionally, a local carpenter will construct a new circulation desk. Kelley hopes that once renovations are done, the Millers Falls Library can hold an open house later this year to celebrate the upgrade.
“I think once everything is in its place and all the new furniture comes in, I think we’ll have a nice open house,” Kelley said.
