GREENFIELD — The new music ministry team at the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield — made up of Michael Pfitzer, minister of music, and Dorothy Claire Glover, organist/pianist — is ramping up the fall music program and welcomes participation by residents who enjoy singing and/or playing a wide range of sacred and secular music.

“We want this to be a program that reflects the community’s wishes and talents, and that involves people to whatever extent they wish to be involved,” Pfitzer said in a statement. “Some may want to sing every Sunday; others may want to drop by and try it, sing now and then, or offer to play an instrumental piece. We’re eager to see who shows up and to take it from there.”

Pfitzer brings a wealth of church and community choral experience to his role as minister of music and is also currently serving as choral director at Deerfield Academy. He completed his doctorate in conducting at Boston University, his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and his undergraduate degree in music and history at Tufts University. Prior to starting at Deerfield Academy in 2021, he had taught at the University of Albany, Framingham State University, Boston University and Harvard University. He served as director of music at the First Parish Church of Stow & Acton for nine years and has led community choruses of 50 to 150 members in the Boston and Cambridge area.

Glover’s most recent church experience was with the United Congregational Church in Holyoke where she served as director of music. Prior to moving to Massachusetts in 2022, she had been a choir director and organist with two Presbyterian churches in Mississippi. Glover earned her bachelor’s degree in music at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, and completed post-graduate studies in piano and organ at the Golandsky Institute in Berkeley, California. She currently teaches piano at Glover Piano Studio in South Deerfield and at Deerfield Academy.

“Both of us were drawn to working in a collaborative church community where the lead minister and music ministry team work together to shape a worship experience that reaches everyone present,” Pfitzer said in a statement.

“Since we all express ourselves in different ways, for some, music is the way in; for others, it may be the words that are spoken or sung,” Glover said in a statement. “What’s exciting is that we can all participate.”

Choir rehearsals are held in the church sanctuary on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Singers and musicians of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome. For more information or to express interest, email music@greenfieldsecondchurch.com.
