SHELBURNE — All involved parties escaped without injury and no citations were issued following a two-vehicle crash that reduced the Mohawk Trail (Route 2) to one lane of traffic for a portion of Wednesday evening.

Shane Naughton, 39 of Winchester, New Hampshire, recounted he was driving east when his Toyota RAV4 was struck by a car driven by a woman near the intersection of South Main Street and the Mohawk Trail. The collision caused the RAV4 to flip onto its roof, skid across the road and roll back onto its tires. The SUV’s airbags deployed. First responders were dispatched at 5:08 p.m.

“It was a ... very smooth tumble,” Naughton said on the side of the road after the Toyota was towed away. “She hit me just right that I flipped almost immediately.”

The other involved vehicle was a 2002 Honda Civic, according to the Shelburne Police Department.

Naughton said he was coming home from work at SAP Arms in Dalton. He noted his shepherd mix, named Abigail, appeared unharmed.

“I think she’s OK,” he said, mentioning that the canine was in the backseat at the moment of collision. “I found her in the trunk, so she definitely got thrown pretty good.”

Jeffrey Belanger, a patrol officer with the Shelburne Police Department, said the collision is under investigation. He said both vehicles were towed by Stagecoach Auto Repair in Charlemont.

That section of the Mohawk Trail was reopened to two-lane traffic at 5:51 p.m.
