Northfield to pool opioid settlement funds with other towns

NORTHFIELD — Northfield Selectboard members voted to give the Northfield Board of Health control of the opioid settlement funds, enabling the town to join a group of towns pooling their opioid settlement funds to support recovery and harm reduction projects led by the Franklin Regional Council of Governments (FRCOG).

Dr. Ruth Potee, a member of the Northfield Board of Health who holds several positions fighting addiction in Franklin County, addressed the Selectboard at a recent meeting, making the case that Northfield should join several rural towns pooling the “tiny amount of money” awarded to many small towns in the 2022 settlement.

“Rural towns really got screwed,” Potee said.

Potee said that FRCOG would use the money to expand recovery resources, support for pregnant and parenting people with opioid use disorder, and post-incarceration recovery support.

The Selectboard unanimously voted to give the Board of Health control of the funds, with the caveat that the Board of Health will need final approval from the NorthfieldSelectboard before spending any of the money, enabling the Board of Health to pool the funds.

The sergeant role was a promotion, and the detective position was a lateral movement requiring 80-100 hours of additional training on subjects such as sexual assault investigating, fingerprinting, and photography.

The funding for the role comes from a preexisting stipend to which the Police Department has access.

After the motions to appoint Cobileanschi and Weaver to the positions passed, selectboard member Barbara “Bee” Jacque said that the selectboard is “thrilled” to see the two men fill these roles.
