GREENFIELD — City resident Mary Choiniere, 61, was killed and another adult injured after a fire ravaged a single-story house at 52 Silver St. late Wednesday night. A third resident escaped the blaze without injury.

According to Fire Chief Robert Strahan, firefighters arrived on scene after a 911 call at 11:15 p.m. reported a structure fire with residents trapped inside. He described the house as being “fully involved” by flames and smoke.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and made entry to search for occupants, Choiniere was found dead inside and her husband was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center. Greenfield Police Chief Todd Dodge confirmed Choiniere’s identity on Thursday morning, following notification of next of kin. She is listed as one of the homeowners, according to city property records. The condition of her husband was not immediately known Thursday night.

According to a joint statement from the Greenfield Police and Fire departments, State Fire Marshal Jon Davine and Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan, a third occupant of the house, Choiniere’s roommate and coworker Dan Fournier, reported hearing smoke alarms and “escaped without physical injury.”

Choiniere worked at The Rendezvous restaurant in Turners Falls, where her coworkers Dale Badi and Fournier said a fundraiser will be held in the near future to support the fire victims.

Fournier said in an interview Thursday that he worked with Choiniere for approximately four years. Choiniere, he said, let him stay with her when he lost his home.

“It’s just too soon,” Fournier said. “My hands are still black [from the fire].”

Badi described Choiniere as being both “feisty” and willing to give “the shirt off her back” for anyone that needed help. She said Choiniere was a beloved member of her community who hosted holiday parties for her friends and staff every year.

“When I worked here three years ago, I had just met Mary [Choiniere]. We worked together about a month and I didn’t have a car. ... She let me borrow hers,” Badi recalled. “We were spending Christmas and [Thanksgiving] — all the holidays. She’s extremely giving and a wonderful lady. She didn’t have any kids, but she kind of adopted all of us as her family.”

Choiniere, Badi said, left behind her two dogs. She said she was able to house Choiniere’s small dog, but she is looking for a place to house the larger dog, which she believes is a German shepherd mix.

The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by the Greenfield Fire Department, Greenfield Police Department, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and State Police assigned to the DA’s office. They are supported by the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance & Enforcement Unit.

“The Fire Department and emergency responders are saddened by this tragedy,” Strahan said, “and we are conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of this fire.”
