SUNDERLAND — As the South County Senior Center and architecture firm edmStudio finalize a feasibility study to identify the center’s future home, residents of the three towns are invited to an open house on Wednesday to share feedback on some of the recommendations.

The open house will be held in Sunderland at the South County Senior Center, 22 Amherst Road, on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Folks can check out preliminary concepts of building footprints and chat with town officials and representatives from edmStudio.

The Senior Center Board of Oversight, edmStudio and Senior Center Director Jennifer Remillard have looked at the South Deerfield Congregational Church, the Whately Town Offices and the former Sinauer Associates/Oxford University Press building at 23 Plumtree Road in Sunderland as potential future homes for the Senior Center.

“This is a great opportunity for folks to come in and share what they would like to see in a new senior center,” Remillard said. “This is also an opportunity to see which location they may prefer over others and then the Senior Center Board of Oversight is going to give a recommendation.”

With a $75,000 Efficiency and Regionalization grant, received in December 2022, edmStudio is working with Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately to determine the best location for a future home for the Senior Center, as well as estimates of the general costs to make those plans become a reality. Deerfield serves as the fiduciary agent of the South County Senior Center.

The Senior Center has been without a permanent home since the 1888 Building closed due to the pandemic and never reopened due to contaminants in the building. Other locations over the years have included a tent outside the 1888 Building, the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in South Deerfield and its current space at 22 Amherst Road in Sunderland.

Following Wednesday’s open house, the Senior Center Board of Oversight will meet on Saturday, Oct. 5, and may make a recommendation then, according to Remillard.
