GREENFIELD — Police have been unable to substantiate a claim of “tainted dog treats” that circulated on social media over the weekend.

“We spent some resources over the weekend,” Greenfield Deputy Police Chief William Gordon said. “If anybody has evidence of this, then by all means, call the Police Department and we’ll follow up with it. All we see right now is one person making an allegation that we’re unable to confirm.”

Gordon said the Police Department reviewed video footage and tried to follow up with the individual who originally reported that tainted treats were being dispersed around the city. The department has received no other reports of a similar nature.

“We’re skeptical at best when these things come across Facebook, but we do look into them,” he said.

Keri Gardent, hospital director at Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital in South Deerfield, said she was unaware of the concerns circulating on Facebook but she has not seen any relevant cases come through in the patient log-in system.
