WHATELY — Routes 5 and 10 near Tom’s Long Hot Dogs and L & L Fence Co. is expected to be closed until at least 4 p.m. after a car struck a utility pole.
The Whately Police and Fire departments, as well as the Northampton Fire Department, were called to the area of 45 State Road at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, Whately Police Officer Zach Liebenow said first responders saw a Toyota sedan off the road and power lines down.
The driver, described as a middle-aged man, apparently suffered an “unknown medical condition” while driving southbound on Routes 5 and 10. Liebenow said the driver and his passenger were transported by ambulance to Baystate Franklin Medical Center with suspected minor injuries.
At around 12:45 p.m., Massachusetts Department of Transportation and utility company personnel were on scene working to replace the pole and wires. While the road is closed, drivers on Routes 5 and 10 are being asked to detour on Interstate 91.
No charges or citations were issued. According to Liebenow, the car is likely totaled.
