SHELBURNE — After 76 years, the Shelburne Grange Fair is still going strong.

This year’s Shelburne Grange Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Fellowship Hall, located at 17 Little Mohawk Road. The event is free.

The Shelburne Grange was founded in 1903 to unite and support the agricultural community. The first Shelburne Grange Fair was held in 1948 to celebrate the agricultural community’s accomplishments while bringing residents together for a day of fun.

The Grange and its fair have grown beyond just agriculture, said Barbara Giguere, who chairs the Shelburne Grange Fair Committee.

“I think it’s important to have events to draw the community together,” she said. “The Grange may have started as a way to support agriculture but it has grown to support the community as well.”

Opening at 9 a.m. will be the Women’s Fellowship Bake Sale. An inflatable obstacle course will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there will be weaving demonstrations on a loom throughout the day.

For the first time in the fair’s 76 years, guests will include some new scaly friends. The New Hampshire-based nonprofit Morphs & Milestones will offer a meet and greet with some of its reptiles from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors to the Exhibit Hall can peruse vegetables, cookies, flower bouquets, drawings, paintings, collages, mixed-media art, butter, maple syrup, fruits and other agricultural products. Exhibit Hall entries must be registered by noon on Friday, Aug. 23, as judging will take place Friday evening.

Live music is also on the agenda. Local musician Dusti Dufresne will perform from noon to 1:30 p.m. and will host karaoke sessions throughout the day, and the Shelburne Falls Military Band will perform from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The fair will end with an auction of locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods and more that were on display in the Exhibit Hall. Proceeds will support the Hawlemont, Agriculture and You (HAY) program at the elementary school, which helps students develop a passion for farming.

“So you have a chance to win the prize-winning apple pie and hopefully they’ll leave the recipe, too, so you can make the prize-winning pie all year,” Giguere said.

Guests can pick up food from the concession stand, which will offer coffee, doughnuts, hot dogs, hamburgers and more, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, barbecue chicken will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m. for $15.
