Church’s annual barbecue set forLabor Day

WHATELY — The First Congregational Church’s annual barbecue returns to town on Labor Day, Sept. 2.

The community tradition will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the church, 177 Chestnut Plain Road, as barbecue chicken — made with a secret sauce — is offered alongside local corn, potatoes, a roll and a brownie. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children. Meals are to-go only.

Reservations are required by Aug. 25 and can be made by calling 413-665-2653. Tickets are cash or check only.

Whately hiring animal inspector

WHATELY — The town is accepting applications for the position of animal inspector, which manages rabies control for domestic animals and annual barn inspections.

A job description and copy of the application is available on the town website. The position is part-time, non-benefited and is paid by a $1,189 annual stipend. Review of applications will begin on Sept. 11 and applications will be accepted until the role is filled. Applications can be sent to adminassist@whately.org.

Summer safety education session planned on Aug. 29

LEVERETT — Public Health Nurse Dr. Sarah Fiske and Fire Chief Brian Cook will deliver a free summer safety education session on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m.

The session will be held at the Leverett Public Safety Complex, 95 Montague Road. Attendees will learn about how climate change impacts health, accident prevention, emergency preparedness tips and more. Folks in attendance will receive sunscreen and other resources.

Local student graduates from Clark University

WORCESTER — Deerfield resident Honey Dew Lawless graduated magna cum laude from Clark University this spring with honors in theater arts and a minor in creative writing.

A 2020 Four Rivers Charter Public School graduate, Lawless was a featured playwright at the eighth biennial Clark University New Play Festival this spring and is pursuing a master’s degree at the university this year.
