South County Senior Center hosting romance scams talk

SOUTH DEERFIELD — The South County Senior Center is partnering with the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office to hold a talk on romance scams on Wednesday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m.

The DA’s Consumer Protection Unit will share tips and other information regarding these types of scams at the Senior Center’s Holy Family Roman Catholic Church location, located at 29 Sugarloaf St.

Senior Center Director Jennifer Remillard said she recently became aware of another attempt to scam a member of the community and is reminding folks to be cognizant of potential email, phone or text scams.

Whately ZIP code discussion set for June 29

WHATELY — The Selectboard is inviting residents to Town Hall, 194 Chestnut Plain Road, on Thursday, June 29, at 6 p.m. for a community information session regarding a possible shift to only using one ZIP code in Whately.

The town is considering requesting that the U.S. Postal Service shift Whately from three ZIP codes to only using the 01093 ZIP code in an effort to reduce mailing headaches for residents, towns and delivery drivers. ZIP codes also play a role in demographic stats, excise tax bills and other town or government affairs.

Conway student awarded Friends of the Field Memorial Library scholarship

CONWAY — Victoria Weagle has received a $500 scholarship from the Friends of the Field Memorial Library for her essay suggesting how artificial intelligence can benefit scientists in research and experiments.

Weagle was awarded the scholarship at a celebratory event with family and friends at the Field Memorial Library on June 17. She plans to study biology at Western New England University in the fall.

Local students named to College of William and Mary dean’s list

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Three students from southern Franklin County communities were named to the College of William and Mary’s spring semester dean’s list.

Conway resident Celina Barton, Leverett resident Selwyn Heminway and Sunderland resident Chase Cherewatti were all named to the dean’s list, which requires attaining a 3.6 grade point average for the semester. Additionally, Heminway graduated from the college, earning his bachelor’s degree this spring.
