SOUTH HADLEY — Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the afternoon wave Monday, as Orchards Golf Club hosted a qualifier for the 2025 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

The top three teams (and two alternates) advanced to the Four-Ball Championship, scheduled to be played May 17-21, 2025 at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J.

Brian Hedstrom and Gregg Hedstrom snagged medalist honors thanks to an 8-under-par 63. The Hedstroms birdied five of their last six holes, finishing on the front nine, to get in the clubhouse with the lead after their morning round.

Seven-under 64 was needed to get into a position to advance, as three teams were tied for second place at 7-under when darkness suspended the rest of the round until Tuesday.

Hadley’s Nick Stern and teammate Ron Laverdiere of Amherst overcame a delay when play was suspended due to weather early in their round, and ultimately shot a 2-under 69 to finish in a tie for 27th place. The duo notched birdies at Nos. 3, 8 and 15 to go against a bogey at No. 12 – the only blemish on the scorecard all day.

South Hadley’s Derek Pinciak and partner Joseph Volk of Springfield also put together a solid 2-under 69. The team was 1-over at the turn but sank four birdies on the back nine to get into red figures on the day.

South Hadley’s Cody Miller, fresh off a runner-up finish at the Mass. Amateur Public Links Championship at Ledges GC last month, teamed with Granby’s Dan Sullivan and shot a 1-under 70 on Monday.

The Holyoke duo of Michael Mertes and Joe Wilson also shot 1-under 70, highlighted by a 3-under 33 on the front nine.

South Deerfield’s Keith Burch and Greenfield’s Justin Dion were 1-under through five holes before the weather delay, recording birdies at Nos. 3 and 4. But the duo withdrew from the event after play restarted later in the day.

The Bay Club in Mattapoisett will host a final qualifier in Massachusetts on Sept. 19.
