GREENFIELD — The Barn Grocery Store, at 95 River St., announced its closure Tuesday.

“After 20 years, The Barn will be closing at the end of this month,” a post on the grocery store’s Facebook page reads. “We are selling off inventory at 50 percent off, while it lasts.”

The Barn is a full-service independent grocery store with 10,000 square feet of retail space. The store’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to its website.

Greenfield Recorder archives from 2002 indicate The Barn opened that year, offering “a no-frills approach to selling groceries culled from other businesses because of damage, overstocking or the proximity of expiration dates. It’s modeled after the Mix ‘N’ Match on Olive Street, where The Barn’s co-owner Victoria L. Maiers was manager.”

Attempts by Recorder staff to speak with an owner onsite Tuesday were unsuccessful.

In December 2001, Maiers, Janet A. Craven of Leeds and SHU Realty Trust bought the River Street site from Howard J. and Carole J. Arkush for $375,000, according to Recorder archives. For 40 years, the space was the A.J. Howard Company.

The official owner of The Barn is M.E.L.V. Inc., according to the business certificate in the City Clerk’s Office. City Clerk Kathy Scott said the certificate was renewed in 2016 and expires in July.

“Thank you to all of you who supported us in making healthy food affordable to families,” reads the grocery store’s weekly flyer.
