Local Roundup: Rebecca Rodgers helps Team Strause earn second place finish at 2023 USA Curling Women’s National Championship

Leyden’s Rebecca Rodgers added another medal to her growing total over the weekend.
Competing on Team Strouse at the 2023 USA Curling Women’s National Championship in Denver, Rodgers — playing as the lead — helped her squad reach the championship game on Saturday against Team Peterson.
Team Peterson took a 3-0 lead to open the championship match and Team Strouse was unable to recover, as Rodgers & Co. took home silver with an 8-5 defeat.
Team Strouse went 7-3 in the week-long tournament, picking up wins over Team Scheel (7-4), Team Workin (6-4), Team McMakin (8-6), Team Rhyme (8-7), Team Bear (7-4) and Team Anderson (5-4) in group play before once again beating Team Anderson (9-4) in the semifinals to secure a spot in Saturday’s championship match. It was the best-ever finish for the 22-year-old Pioneer Valley Regional School graduate at Nationals.

Greenfield High School alum Victoria Marin had herself a day at the Westfield State Track and Field Invitational at Smith College on Saturday.
Marin won three events to score 38 points for Westfield State, taking first in the 60 meter hurdles (9.56 seconds), the long jump (4.84 meters) and the triple jump (10.24 meters) to help lead the Owls to a team victory. Marin also took second in the high jump with a top mark of 1.56 meters.
Multiple Deerfield Academy teams were in action Saturday, with the DA girls hockey team picking up a 4-0 win over Berkshire while in the pool, the Big Green boys swim team beat Hotchkiss, 104-76, while the DA girls swim team beat Hotchkiss, 104-79.

In the Wednesday Mixed League, Jill Jablonski had the women’s high single (104) and tied with Marily Wilson for the women’s high triple (285. Erich Price rolled the men’s high single (115) and John Herron had the men’s high triple (301).
In the Thursday Mixed Social, Colleen Barrows rolled the women’s high single (114) and triple (309) while Nick Brown had the men’s high single (112) and triple (309).
