HAWLEY — Voters swiftly approved buying a new 1-ton truck for the Highway Department during a Special Town Meeting on Monday.
In a quick meeting at the Town Office, Hawley residents voted to pay for half of the total cost of the new truck through taxes. The other half of the money will come from the Highway Stabilization Fund.
“Everyone in Hawley would like their roads plowed in the winter,” said Administrative Assistant Tinky Weisblat. “We are getting low on usable trucks. This new one will be very nice.”
The Special Town Meeting warrant asked for $100,000, though Highway Superintendent Gary Mitchell previously said the town has already located a truck to buy that would cost about $80,000.
The truck in need of replacement is a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with a major defect with its electronic transmission control.
