Local Roundup: Pioneer boys basketball cruises past Mount Greylock in opener, 93-20

The Pioneer boys basketball team’s defensive effort was on point in its season opener against Mount Greylock on Friday. 

A 22-0 run to open the game led to a 62-7 advantage at halftime, which allowed Pioneer to run away for an easy 93-20 victory in Williamstown. 

Brayden Thayer knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 28 points while Kurt Redeker tossed in 22 points for the Panthers (1-0). Alex McClelland tallied 12 points, Matt Richott recorded 10 points while Hayden Killeen added seven points in the victory. 

Ware 70, Franklin Tech 33 — After knocking off St. Mary’s in the semifinals of the Eagle Holiday Classic on Thursday, Franklin Tech was unable to take down Ware in the championship game. Ware took home the trophy with a 70-33 win in Turners Falls on Friday. 

Nolyn Stafford led the way for Tech (1-1) with eight points, Gabe Mota scored seven points, Hunter Donahue tossed in six points while Brody Hicks added four points for the Eagles. 

Four Rivers 57, White Oaks 42 — Henry Schwerin scored 19 points while Cooper Whitney tallied 14 points as the Otters picked up a win in Westfield Friday. 

Miles Retzlaff added 10 points in the victory. 

Girls basketball

Hoosac 69, Greenfield 27 — The Green Wave opened their season in Cheshire on Friday, falling to the defending Div. 5 state champs.

Gloria McDonald led the way with 10 points while Anna Bucala, Elderina Cecunjanin, Tayler Bergeron and Mackensie Goncalves each had four points for Greenfield. 

Mount Greylock 54, Franklin Tech 29 — The Eagles were unable to take home the championship in the Eagle Holiday Classic, falling to the Mounties in the title game on Friday in Turners. 

Greylock held a 32-13 lead at the intermission. 

Brayleigh Burgh scored 12 points, Hannah Gilbert tallied five points, Lindsey Taylor had three points while Ariel Peters pulled down seven rebounds in the loss. 

Boys swimming

Turners 63, Monson 27 — William Tyler, Tyler Galenski, Liam Bliss and Malcolm Tyler blazed through the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2 minutes, 11.13 seconds while the group also winning the 400 freestyle relay (4:37.69), helping the Thunder earn a victory over the Mustangs in Turners on Friday. 

Galenski won the 200 free (2:41.09), Bliss took the 200 individual medley (2:22.40) and the 50 free (28.81), Malcolm Tyler took first in the 500 free (6:56.43) and William Tyler won the 100 back (1:22.10) for Turners. 

Girls swimming

Turners 53, Monson 39 — Avery Heathwaite, Jess Schimmel, Lillian Walker-Hanning and Sylvie DiBartolomeo cruised to a victory in the 200 free relay with a time of 2:07.99, propelling the Thunder to a victory over the visiting Mustangs on Friday. 

DiBartolomeo added a first place finish in the 200 free (2:27.94) and 500 free (6:42), Rosie Fortin placed first in the 100 fly (1:39.25) while Walker-Henning won the 100 breast (1:22.75) for Turners. 

Deeerfield results

The Deerfield Academy girls hockey team defeated Millbrook, 5-0, on Friday in Deerfield.

Boys basketball

Greenfield 76, Commerce 66 — A 22-point performance from Grayson Thomas — eight coming in the fourth quarter — allowed the Green Wave to walk away with a win in their opener, topping Commerce in Springfield on Thursday. 

Greenfield led 38-32 at the half and 51-43 going into the fourth. 

Jon Breor tossed in 18 points, Caleb Thomas recorded 17 points, Caleb Murray finished with 15 points and Gavin Arsenault scored four points in the victory. 

Girls basketball

Franklin Tech 47, McCann Tech 33 — Leading 16-10 at the half, the Eagles outscored the Hornets 31-23 in the final 16 minutes to pick up a victory in the Eagle Holiday Classic semifinals in Turners on Thursday. 

Lili Inman led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds, Hannah Gilbert tallied seven points and five steals, Brayleigh Burgh scored six points, Cordelia Guerin tossed in six points to go along with five steals while Madyson Lynde finished with five points for Franklin Tech. 

Gymnastics

Tumbling Tigers offering programs

The Franklin County YMCA gymnastics program has undergone major upgrades this year. 

The gymnastics center is now a USA Gymnastics recognized facility, featuring trained coaches and dance instructors, and is now competing in YMCA and USAG competitions. Last week, the Tumbling Tigers competed in their first USAG competition of the season, as its AA team placed second in All Around in Level 2 and third place in Level 3. 

Here are the new classes being taught at the YMCA this winter: dance classes include a Dance POM, ballet, adult contemporary dance and jazz dance. Gymnastics classes include open gymnastics for ages 16-plus, adult gymnastics, adventures (preschool), discovery 1 and 2 for those ages six months to one year, exploration 1 and 2 for ages 1-2, beginner 1, 2, 3 gymnastics, intermediate gymnastics, advanced gymnastics, acro-tumbling, ninja, parkour, homeschool gymnastics and adaptive gymnastics.
