Library to host reading of ‘Spirit and Spa’

WARWICK — Members of the local spiritualist community will read excerpts from “Spirit and Spa” at the Warwick Free Public Library, 4 Hotel Road, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 7 to 7:45 p.m., then field questions until 8 p.m.

“Spirit and Spa” is a collaboration by the late Louise Shattuck and David James. The readings will be by the Rev. Sheryl Sadler-Twyon and James, members of The National Spiritual Alliance.

Sadler-Twyon’s connection to Lake Pleasant is through her paternal great-grandparents, Frank and Myra Wilbur, he an herbalist and she a medium. The Wilburs were contemporaries of the Bickford-Shattuck family — which was involved in the founding of the 150-year-old Montague village of Lake Pleasant — in the pioneering days of the spiritualist summer campground.

Henry Barber, a Warwick resident, was listed in 1879 as an original member of the New England Spiritualist Campmeeting Association following its incorporation.

This free program is intended for people with mild memory concerns. It is not for anyone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

The four-week course is designed to help participants acquire strategies to combat the top memory challenges that people complain about. Students will learn simple strategies to help remember names, faces, where they put things, and upcoming responsibilities or appointments in their schedule, as well as improve their ability to bridge frustrating “tip of the tongue” memory gaps. Students receive a folder with printed handouts with exercises, summaries and quizzes.

Advance registration is required. Call Director Colleen Letourneau at the Senior Center at 413-498-2901, ext. 114 to register.
