Locked in a tie game with just over 2 minutes remaining in regulation, the Boston College women’s basketball team outscored UMass by a 9-4 margin down the stretch en route to a 62-57 non-conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill.

The Minutewomen dropped to 4-6 overall with the loss, while BC improved to 8-4.

Yahmani McKayle tied the game 53-53 for UMass with 2 minutes, 24 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, but BC’s Kennedi Jackson scored with 2:01 to play to give the hosts a 55-53 lead.

The Minutewomen missed a 3-pointer on their ensuing possession, then turned the ball over on back-to-back possession. The Eagles got a huge 3 from Savannah Samuel with 44 seconds to go, and kept UMass at arm’s length over the final minute to survive with the six-point win.

UMass came out of the games hot, storming to a 21-16 lead after one quarter with a McKayle 3-pointer in the final minute putting the exclamation mark on a strong period.

The Minutewomen led 32-29 at halftime, but the Eagles outscored them 20-11 in the third to regain the lead.

McKayle paced the offensive effort for UMass, scoring a game-high 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range — her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring output. Stefanie Kulesza (12 points) and Megan Olbrys (11 points, 9 rebounds) joined her in double figures to aid the Minutewoman cause, while Allie Palmieri went for seven points and six assists. Lilly Ferguson pulled down six rebounds to go with three points, and Momo LaClair added six points and two assists.

BC’s Teya Sidberry led the hosts with 11 points, and Samuel tossed in 10.
